Iran's dentist to the stars offers views on US

TEHRAN, Iran ? Prior to the Islamic revolution, Iran and America shared very good relations. The former Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, had an army with modern hardware supplied by the U.S. There were direct flights between New York City and Tehran and the city was full of hotels run by major American chains.

But the once-friendly relations between the two nations came to a screeching halt in 1979 when cleric-led radicals ousted the U.S.-backed shah and the subsequent Iran hostage crisis when 52 Americans were held in the U.S. embassy for 444 days.?

These days, Iranians? relations with America are somewhat schizophrenic ? the government is stridently anti-American, but many Iranians are not.?

That is the opposite of other countries in the region where governments receive large amounts of money and military hardware from the U.S., but whose people generally dislike America.

Tehran?s dentist to the stars
A popular dentist in an affluent part of Tehran represents the love-hate relationship many Iranians feel toward the U.S.

In his Park Avenue-style dental practice, the latest Newsweek, Time and Architectural Digest magazines are on offer in the waiting room. A large flat-screen TV sits on the wall, along with an expansive fish tank and a framed dentistry degree from New York University.?

Iranians are consumers who love brand names ? even when it comes to their dental care. When a friend of mine introduced me to the dentist, he told me he is the guy to go to if I wanted to brag about where I get my teeth cleaned. He is, in essence, Tehran?s equivalent of a Beverly Hills ?dentist to the stars.?

A large part of his reputation comes not just from the fact that he has all the latest, modern dentistry equipment, but that he was trained in the U.S. and offers Western-style service. He was educated in dentistry at NYU and lived, worked and studied from the East Coast to West Coast.

Coffee mugs bearing pictures of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs are on sale as a man works on a MacBook at a shop in northern Tehran on Jan.19, 2012. Despite the fact that Apple observes a U.S. embargo that restricts the sale of their goods in Iran, their products are wildly popular there.

Sporting fashionable glasses, a crisp blue button-down shirt and tie, the dentist, who is in his mid-40s, agreed to speak with me on the condition of anonymity. ?

?I am who I am because of my education in the States,? said the dentist. ?I am very American, but my view on U.S. politics is very different.?

I asked him what he thought about the tough economic sanctions being imposed on Iran ? which block access to the international banking system and hurt?sales of Iranian crude oil ? as a way to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.

Iranians feel the pain of sanctions: 'Everything has doubled in price'

?Why are there sanctions against Iran?? he said. ?Wasn?t it America that helped Iran fire up its nuclear program 35 years ago? The sanctions just hurt ordinary people.??

At the same time, he praised Iranians? resilience.

?After 30 years of sanctions, embargoes, war and threats of war, Iran has kept its head above water,? he said. ?Most other countries would have collapsed, but Iranians have found ways to circumvent these problems; they help each other.?

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

The dentist believes that one reason for? misunderstanding between America and Iran is that Americans have little real information on Iran ? that they know only what they see on TV, which is often a very small part of the bigger picture.

For years, he says, he tried to convince American colleagues to give lectures on dentistry in Iran, but that they were reluctant to do so because of their perceptions. When one of them finally agreed to come, and experienced the famous Iranian hospitality and warmth, his perception of Iran changed very quickly.

Asked why he came back to Iran about eight years ago after spending most of his life in the States, he said he just felt like something was missing, adding that he loves Tehran because it?s like New York City ? a noisy, fast-paced 24/7 place.

Steve Jobs photos on the wall
The desire for brand names in Iran that signify Western quality goes beyond dentistry.?

Mohsen, who agreed to speak with me on condition that only his first name be used, owns an electrical goods store in Tehran selling mostly black market Apple products. (Typically, Apple, as well as other imported goods that would be subject to U.S. embargoes, come into Iran via Dubai and the Persian Gulf. They are sold openly in stores in Tehran).?

He said that most Iranians love American products and culture and that personally he longs for the day that the two countries have normal relations.

Then a frown appeared on his face. ?But,? he said, ?they do things that even rub a moderate person, like me, the wrong way.?

?I read an article yesterday about an Iranian-American who went into an Apple store in the States and wanted to buy an iPad to send to her uncle in Tehran. When the sales person found out she was Iranian and wanted to send the iPad to Iran, the store refused to sell it to her,? he said.

?This is crazy! I sell 50 iPads and iPhones here a week. I have a picture of Steve Jobs on the wall! These sorts of things don?t do any good for relations between Iranian and American people.??

The story Mohsen related was widely reported in the U.S. An Apple employee in Atlanta declined to sell an iPad to an Iranian-American customer, citing company policy that aims to comply with U.S. trade sanctions with Iran that can lead to individual fines of up to $250,000. ?

Iran trade sanctions get personal in Apple stores??

In the meantime, Mohsen?s Apple products will have to remain on the black market.?

Still, not all Iranians have such a moderate view towards the U.S. Hussein, a hard-line student at Tehran University, has a very negative view of the States. (He also spoke on condition that only his first name be used.)

?All America has done is try to bully Iran, chip away at its nuclear rights and steal our oil,? Hussein said.

?I don?t think we should be talking to the Americans because ultimately they want our demise,? he said. ?Throughout history, they have interfered in our country, only harming us. We have nothing in common.?

NFC Is Great, But Mobile Payments Solve A Problem That Doesn?t Exist

Screen shot 2012-06-30 at 1.52.37 PMFor the past few years, we’ve been told over and over again that NFC will eventually replace the common wallet. And yes, NFC is a great technology. Parts of Europe and China are using it for public transport transactions, and the sharing of content between devices is incredibly cool (just check out this commercial). And moreover, the ability to ditch all of your loyalty cards and combine them in one place (potentially) PassBook-style would be highly convenient. But where mobile payments are concerned, there is no problem to be solved. Let’s just start with the small stuff. For one, the motion itself should be no different. It’s not like contactless payments via mobile is a more physically efficient form of living and transacting. You grab your credit card out of your wallet in your pocket, and swipe it through the reader (or in some cases tap it, just like the phone). In the case of NFC, you grab your phone out of your pocket, open Google Wallet (or whatever), and tap it to the reader. It’s the same exact motion. But that doesn’t even matter when we start to consider the real obstacles for NFC mobile payments. There are two issues: the smaller is that, along with not being any faster or easier physically, no one is actually getting rid of their wallet. For one, everyone needs an ID and an ID isn’t safe in a pocket or loose in a bag. So, until I can use my phone as a form of identification at the airport, with the police, or to go to a Dr.’s appointment, my wallet will still remain. And it’s fair to assume that at least some people prefer to have a little cash on them, just in case. I took a quick Twitter poll using PopTip (a newly launched TechStars company), and it turns out that the few respondents I had mostly feel comfortable without any cash. But, I also assume that the majority of my Twitter followers are generally tech-savvy early adopters, so I still stand behind the fact that you’ll continue carrying a wallet, or some other carrier of small, valuable pieces of paper like insurance cards, IDs, etc. Moreover, all merchants would need to be set up for NFC transactions to allow the consumer to ditch their wallet, not just forward thinking giants like American Eagle, Macy’s and OfficeMax. It’s not like

Who is your retro big-brother TV crush?

AP file

Barry Williams, shown at right in photo with his "Brady Bunch" cast members, was a popular big-brother crush for many.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

When word came Wednesday of the death of?Don Grady, who played Robbie Douglas on "My Three Sons," many a now-grown girl felt the sting of losing one of her childhood big-brother crushes.

There was?a period in the 1960s-1980s when big brothers were a staple of TV sitcoms in a way they aren't today. Whether you were?the youngest?of seven or an only child, you only needed to turn on the set to feel a part of a rollicking, loving family, and so many of them had at least one big brother leading the clan.

These were big bros to be proud of. They?were always handsome, always polite, and it was easy to imagine them?quarterbacking the family in a game of touch football or gently carrying the littlest family member home from a picnic or fireworks show.

Here are a few of our favorite retro TV big brothers.

Robbie Douglas, 'My Three Sons'
We have to start with the late Don Grady. Robbie Douglas was one of the handsomest of the TV brothers, but he wasn't originally the oldest son. In the early days of the show, Mike was the oldest Douglas son, but when actor Tim Considine was written out, the sons shifted. Robbie became the oldest and orphan Ernie was adopted to keep the number of sons at three. Robbie was a great big brother, though, and eventually he married college classmate Katie, who gave birth to triplets -- the next generation of "My Three Sons."

Wally Cleaver, 'Leave It to Beaver'
The oldest big brother on our list -- "Beaver" actually began in the 1950s -- Wally set the gold standard for others to follow. Part of his appeal was that even though he was a heartbreakingly handsome athlete?who made the girls swoon, he didn't know it. With his parents, and little brother Beaver, he was a humble goofball, always there for his mischievous little bro and a prime part of the family team.

Keith Partridge, 'The Partridge Family'
Hunky David Cassidy soon grew tired of his clean-cut image as Keith Partridge, lead singer of the Partridge Family and locker-poster heartthrob, even appearing nude (the photo was cropped) on the cover of Rolling Stone. But girls didn't tire of his gentle big-brother image and that irresistible feathered hair. We longed to ride that crazy multi-colored?bus with him, and sit in the audience as he crooned "I Think I Love You."

Greg Brady, 'The Brady Bunch'
It was no surprise to 1970s TV watchers that Greg (Barry Williams) and Marcia (Maureen McCormick) snuck some kisses during the filming of "The Brady Bunch." After all, they weren't even biological siblings on the show, let alone in real life, and who could resist the many charms of Greg? Whether he was directing the blended family in a movie about Pilgrims or leading the family singing groups (the Silver Platters and the Brady Six), Greg was the big brother -- and the big crush -- 1970s girls adored.

Richie Cunningham, 'Happy Days'
Lucky Joanie. Red-headed Richie was no Fonzie, no epitome of leather-jacketed cool, but he was the ultimate big brother with a good head on his shoulders. He may not have had the teen idol looks of some of the other big brothers, but there was no denying the appeal of his clean-cut appearance and solid midwestern morals. Joanie loves Chachi, but we loved Richie.

Theo Huxtable, 'The Cosby Show'
Big brothers had started to fade off of shows in the 1980s, and Theo Huxtable wasn't even the oldest in his family -- Sondra and Denise came first. But to Vanessa, Rudy, and later little Olivia, Theo was a great big bro. Sure, he was a little more hapless (that Gordon Gartrell shirt!)?and a lot less suave than the brothers of decades past, but he was always funny and sweet, and by the time he was working with dyslexic kids as a college student, we loved him all the more.

Tracy Arm and Ford's Terror

Saturday June 23, 2012 Sandborn Canal to Tracy Arm Cove

There is not a cloud in the sky this morning as BJ and I sit reading and drinking coffee. I was up early enough to watch the bright sunlight spread across the peaks and seep down onto the water to rest on the bright white head of a bald eagle eating raw fish for breakfast. We stick with scones. The current gives us slow, revolving views of mountains beyond mountains.

Back in Stephens Passage we encountered a stiff wind with plenty of chop which we quartered without too much discomfort for the five-hour trip to Tracy Arm. We saw the first icebergs (called bergie-bits around here) while still in the main passage but many ground themselves on the moraines (bars) at the entrance to each arm. A large current sucked us into Tracy Arm and then escorted us gently into Tracy Arm Cove. It?s a nice place off the main iceberg route and we anchored as closely as we dared to a stream in hopes of seeing bears in the grass flats nearby. From here we have a perfect view of the snowfields,

the bergie bits floating by like an opening day parade of white yachts and as we swing we scan the shoreline for grazing grizzlies.

Sunday June 24th, 2012 Tracy Arm

I awoke at 6:00 AM to another cloudless day and warm enough already to sit in the recliner on the veranda sipping fresh squeezed ? no, in the cockpit drinking coffee I watch little diving ducks commuting to work in small flights. They require long runways and furious flapping to get airborne and I can hear the reverse thrust of their wings as they land. Otherwise it is quiet with only the caw of the raven and a distant waterfall. An iceberg glides slowly out to meet its fate in Stephens Passage.

I wrote forgoing paragraph twelve hours ago and our quiet little anchorage offers a different picture now. The clouds rolled in with the wind this evening and we may be rocked to sleep rather aggressively. But it was quite a day in between. The first berg showed up at the front door of the cove and stuck on the reef. They became more numerous as we rolled

up Tracy Arm and the wind grew stronger. Williwaws would roar out of the deep valleys above us and then we would turn a corner and the wind would be gone. The walls became sheer and high and hundreds of cascading streams keep these sides smooth and clean. There is always an outflow even on an incoming tide. Around a ninety-degree corner my AIS marked a 186 meter ship and I heard him call that he was comin? round the mountain. It turned out to be a mid-sized cruise ship. Whether it had spent the night in there or not, I couldn?t say.

By the time we reached the fork in the arm we were moving slowly and dodging ice all around. When a speedy tour boat went past I followed him onward into the south arm of Sawyer Glacier and he seemed to know a path close to the wall that was clear enough. Between us and the face of the glacier was about a mile of moving ice flow (covered with seals) so I dropped the dinghy and Kira and I went further into the ice flow where we could turn off the motor and hear the

seals grunting and the glacier calve. It was as close as we needed to get to its rugged face. My guess is the harbor seals give birth here on the ice in order to be safe from predators. We saw lots of cubs. The face of South Sawyer Glacier is jagged and pieces constantly crack and fall. It takes a second or two to hear the roar and then look to see the pieces slide into the water. Then you can feel the mini-tsunami roll across the floating ice. BJ stayed with the mother ship in more open water. On the way back the ice had moved and we had to push our way through the bergie bits to make a path. The chunks of ice push back and we were careful not to get between the big bergs. The 36 degree water is a milky blue while the sun is warm. We packed warm clothes for glacier watching but today we needed only sweatshirts.

Monday June 25th, 2012 Tracy Arm Cove to Ford?s Terror

I think the wind blew all night. I got up once and we were rocking but we

were also stuck tight so why worry when you can sleep. By morning the low clouds and rain made us question our plans to see the tall beauties of Endicott Arm but since Tracy Arm Cove holds no memories of calm comfort (or bears) we decided to take a look and the clouds are lifting as we enter the broad avenue of Endicott Arm. We never made it all the way to the glacier up Endicott. Ford?s Terror is a smaller watery canyon seldom entered by boaters because of its very narrow, shallow entrance and tidal currents.

We used the Douglass cruising guide to determine when to enter Ford?s Terror and because it?s all unsurveyed we were dependant on a hand drawn map in the guide. Low slack was an hour and a half after the tide change in Holkham Bay and we hung out at the entrance until it was slack then proceeded dead slow calling out depths and looking for evidence of rocks in the opaque water. As it turns out low slack may be easier than high slack because you can see the rocks and shoals that are not visible at high tide. The channel

was perhaps only 100? wide and 10? deep at its shallowest and it was frankly nerve-wracking. Charts are worthless and I will mark what I remember on the Douglass map for next time.

Past the entrance the depth drops off and the kelp becomes a better marker of the edges so we could look up at the sheer granite walls rising thousands of feet above us. Countless waterfalls cascade down and one stream in particular has cut a deep channel in the face. We slowed in order to absorb what we could. The narrow path ends in a tee and ?not knowing which was best we took the one less travelled by? which before long ended in a beautiful bowl with snowfields and steep forests to the waterline. We scouted depths along the edges for a place to anchor and dropped it in 60? off a stream bank at low tide, which we also marked on the map for next time. Efforts like this deserve a nap and afterwards Kira and I took kayaks over to the mud bank, which was rapidly disappearing under the incoming tide. Kira watched clam bubbles, and poked around in the shallows until

they disappeared. Back in the kayaks we pushed up the stream and rode it back out ? several times. Kira then returned to her 495-piece puzzle with five holes.

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. (AP) ? A stubborn and towering wildfire jumped firefighters' perimeter lines in the hills overlooking Colorado Springs, forcing frantic mandatory evacuation notices for more than 9,000 residents, destroying an unknown number of homes and partially closing the grounds of the sprawling U.S. Air Force Academy.

Heavy smoke and ash billowed from the mountain foothills west of the city. Bright yellow and orange flames flared in the night, often signaling another home lost to the Waldo Canyon Fire, the No. 1 priority for the nation's firefighters.

Interstate 25, which runs through Colorado Springs, was briefly closed to southbound traffic Tuesday. All told, officials said, evacuation orders affected as many as 32,000 residents.

"It was like looking at the worst movie set you could imagine," Gov. John Hickenlooper said after flying over the 9-square-mile fire late Tuesday. "It's almost surreal. You look at that, and it's like nothing I've seen before."

With flames cresting a ridge high above its breathtaking, 28-square-mile campus, the Air Force Academy told more than 2,100 residents to evacuate 600 households. There was no immediate word on whether a new class of 1,045 cadets would report as scheduled on Thursday.

A curtain of flame and smoke teetered above the academy's Falcon Stadium; billowing gray clouds formed a backdrop to its aluminum, glass and steel Cadet Chapel, an icon of the academy. Elsewhere, police officers directing traffic and fleeing residents covered their faces with T-shirts and bandanas to breathe through the smoke.

Colorado Springs Fire Chief Richard Brown insisted that "many, many homes" were saved by firefighters. And Hickenlooper, who spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano Tuesday, told anxious residents that "We have all the support of the U.S. government. We have all the support of the state of Colorado. And we want everybody here to know that."

Throughout the interior West, firefighters have toiled for days in searing, record-setting heat against fires fueled by prolonged drought. Most, if not all, of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana were under red flag warnings, meaning extreme fire danger.

In central Utah, authorities found one woman dead Tuesday when they returned to an evacuated area, marking the first casualty in a blaze that consumed at least two dozen homes. Sanpete County sheriff's officials said they hadn't identified the victim, whose remains were found during a damage assessment of the 60-square-mile Wood Hollow Fire near Indianola.

The nation is experiencing "a super-heated spike on top of a decades-long warming trend," said Derek Arndt, head of climate monitoring at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

The Waldo Canyon fire, which started Saturday, was 5 percent contained before 65-mph wind gusts sent it surging toward Colorado Springs. The cause was under investigation.

To the north in Boulder County, officials evacuated 26 households when a wildfire erupted Tuesday afternoon following a lightning storm. No structures were immediately threatened, but the National Center for Atmospheric Research, perched on a hilltop in front of Boulder's famous Flatirons foothills, closed as a precaution.

And in northern Colorado, the 136-square-mile High Park Fire has destroyed 257 homes and killed one woman, authorities said. That fire was triggered by lightning June 9.

Hickenlooper insisted Colorado was open to tourism, saying Colorado's fires had affected just about a half-percent of all of the state's public lands and perhaps 400 of its 10,000 campground sites.

In Utah, officials said the Wood Hollow Fire was 15 percent contained. High winds forced authorities to shut down part of U.S. 89 near Indianola, and evacuations were called for Fairview, a town of about 1,100 residents.

Elsewhere in the West:

? A fire that charred nearly 70 square miles west of Ruidoso, N.M., was 90 percent contained, with many residents allowed to return home.

? A wildfire north of Helena, Mont., destroyed four homes and forced additional evacuations. Gov. Brian Schweitzer issued a state of emergency for four counties.

? A wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest grew from about 300 acres to 2,000 acres Tuesday, marking the first major wildfire of the season in western Wyoming.

New Mineral Found In Meteorite

Yes, they _blatantly_ named it Panguite in honor of the Linux operating system... Are you retarded?

On a side note, can anybody clean up this gibberish?

Panguite (IMA 2010-057), (Ti4+,Sc,Al,Mg,Zr,Ca)1.8O3, is a new titania, occurring as fine-grained crystals with Ti-rich davisite in an ultra-refractory inclusion within an amoeboid olivine inclusion from the Allende CV3 carbonaceous chondrite.

I feel like I suddenly don't understand english?

I am not a geologist, but...
Panguite [discovery ID?], [chemical composition etc.], is a new [titanium mineral] occurring as fine-grained crystals with [titanium]-rich [other mineral also discovered in the same meteorite] in a [high melting-point] [section] within an [irregularly shaped] [other mineral] [section] from the [meteorite].

Does anybody who actually knows what they're talking about want to chime in?

And, for people who still had trouble with the above:
Panguite is a new [mineral], occurring [with other minerals] [in a meteorite].:P

"There is significant penetration by multinational processed food manufacturers such as Nestle, Kraft, PepsiCo, and Danone into food environments in low-and-middle income countries, where consumption of unhealthy commodities is reachingand in some cases exceedinga level presently observed in high income countries", according to international researchers writing in this week's PLoS Medicine.

The authors from the UK, US, and India (led by David Stuckler from the University of Cambridge), analysed trends in unhealthy food and beverages (sugary drinks and processed foods that are high in salt, fat, and sugar), alcohol, and tobacco commodities by reviewing market data on sales covering 80 countries between 1997 and 2010 with forecasts to the year 2016.

The authors found that not only is the rate of increase in consumption of ''unhealthy commodities'' fastest in low-and middle-income countries but the pace at which consumption is rising in these countries is even faster than has occurred historically in high income countries. Furthermore, multinational companies have now achieved a level of penetration of food markets in middle-income countries similar to what they have achieved in high income countries.

In their analysis, the authors also found that higher intake of unhealthy foods correlates strongly with higher tobacco and alcohol sales, suggesting a set of common tactics by industries producing unhealthy commodities. And while rising income has been strongly associated with higher consumption of unhealthy commodities within countries and over time, the authors found that economic growth does not inevitably lead to higher unhealthy-commodity consumption as high foreign direct investment and free-trade agreements also play a role.

The authors argue that with the global rise of transnational food and drink companies there is a clear need to focus on the role of global producers in manufacturing and marketing the unhealthy commodities implicated in the epidemics of non-communicable diseasesconditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes.

The authors say: "Until health practitioners, researchers, and politicians are able to understand and identify feasible ways to address the social, economic, and political conditions that lead to the spread of unhealthy food, beverage, and tobacco commodities, progress in areas of prevention and control of non-communicable diseases will remain elusive."

Screenwriter Nora Ephron Dead At 71

Oscar-nominated writer of 'Sleepless in Seattle' and 'When Harry Met Sally ... ' died of pneumonia.
By Josh Wigler

Nora Ephron
Photo:

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and director Nora Ephron died Tuesday (June 26) from pneumonia. She was 71. News of Ephron's passing first hit the Internet late Tuesday when journalist Liz Smith, a friend of Ephron's, published a column remembering the late director.

"She never gave the answer I expected to anything. She was grave in her humor, which made it deadly, unexpected, truly funny and dauntingly intelligent," wrote Smith. "She seemed never to want or expect anything, while always demanding the best from the rest of us. She was — always — right and somehow left the smartest, most ambitious and silliest of us in the dust at her feet."

Ephron lived a storied life both on set and behind the scenes. Born in New York City in 1941 and raised in Beverly Hills, California, Ephron worked as a journalist for numerous years before trying her hand writing and directing for film. Her writing appeared in such outlets as Esquire and New York, and she was even married to Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame from 1976 until 1980. She later wed screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi in 1987; they remained married until the time of her death.

In 1983, Ephron's first major Hollywood movie, "Silkwood," arrived in theaters. Starring marquee names including Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher, Ephron's "Silkwood" was based on the true story of Karen Silkwood, who was killed in a suspicious accident during her investigation into the unethical practices of the nuclear power plant that employed her. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including one for Ephron's screenplay.

Over the course of her career, Ephron cemented her place in Hollywood as one of the industry's finest romantic comedy writers. She wrote the iconic "When Harry Met Sally ... " and directed numerous films, including the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan-starring "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." Her final film as writer and director was "Julie & Julia."

"I won't say, 'Rest in peace, Nora,' " Smith wrote in her eulogy of Ephron. "I will just ask, 'What the hell will we do without you?' "

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments.
