Android 'BotNet' is that little extra you get for pirating apps

Take the blue pill

It's been a while since we saw an Android security scare, but the word "BotNet" attached to this one makes up for it. It appears that users in Chile, Indonesia, Lebanon, Oman, the Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Ukraine, and Venezuela have compromised Android phones are have been sending out Viagra spam through Yahoo mail servers.

Microsoft security researcher Terry Zink discovered the whole mess, and he speculates that users are getting infected by pirating apps from unsavory websites that specialize in such. He fails to mention the millions of Microsoft Windows computers that are infected, doing the same thing, but this shows that Android phones are as powerful as yesterday's laptops. Use some common sense and this won't happen to your computer or your Android phone.

In cases like this it's easy to point the finger at folks too cheap to spend a buck or two and buy an app, but the problem goes deeper. Android is insanely popular across the globe. Some folks in some places just can't get paid apps from Google Play, and have to resort to other means to get them. It's a problem that needs a real solution, and we're sure Google is working on one, but I really can't blame anyone for not wanting to wait. If you're somewhere you can't download paid apps from Google Play, please be careful lest you get more than you bargained for.

Lack of power puts damper on July 4th celebrations

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hundreds of thousands from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic were preparing to spend the Fourth of July like America's founders did in 1776, without the conveniences of electricity and air conditioning.

Power outages from Friday's storm altered planned celebrations in a host of ways and left powerless residents grumbling that America's birthday would hardly be a party. Cookouts were cancelled or moved to homes with power. Vacation plans were altered. Some residents without power said they weren't in a holiday mood. And even some whose power had been restored said they had run out of steam to celebrate in the way they had planned.

Friday's storm arrived with little warning and knocked out power to 3 million homes and businesses in states from West Virginia to Ohio and Illinois. Officials blamed 24 deaths on the storm and its aftermath, and power companies in some places estimated it could be the weekend before everyone's power is restored. More than 900,000 homes and businesses remained without power early Wednesday.

As a result, power repairs were taking priority over parties in many parts. At least four planned fireworks displays were cancelled in Maryland because of the outages, with officials saying they couldn't spare police and fire resources for the festivities.

In Rockville, Md., officials called off their celebration because trees and wires were blocking two of the three entrances to the college campus where fireworks were planned. In Gaithersburg, Md., Acting City Manager Tony Tomasello said his city, about 30 minutes north of Washington, cancelled its display because a power company is using its planned celebration location, a fairgrounds, as a staging area for repairs. Hundreds of bucket trucks park there when crews finish their 16-hour shifts, and transformers, gravel and poles are being stored there too.

"Everyone's disappointed. We're disappointed," Tomasello said of cancelling the celebration, adding that it would be rescheduled.

In West Virginia, meanwhile, officials urged people to resist the temptation to set off fireworks at home because the risk of fire is too high. Many brown, crunchy lawns were already potential fuel, but the trees and limbs that fell during the storm have added even more tinder.

Some people affected by the storm were too tired or frustrated to think about fireworks, parties or planned holiday travel. Dennis Andrews, 62, of Ellicott City, Md., had planned to go to Myrtle Beach, S.C. But after spending 14 hours cutting trees that fell on his property, Andrews, who runs a construction equipment rental company, said he was ready to relax by the pool instead.

Other parties were toned down, cancelled or moved. LaJuan Barnett, 44, who runs a daycare in Waldorf, Md., planned a more modest celebration with hot dogs and hamburgers after throwing out at least $350 in spoiled food and spending another $200 on groceries Tuesday.

"We're on a budget," said Barnett, who got her power back on Monday night, after nearly 72 hours.

Power outages and spoiled food also changed the plans of Sharvey Smith, 39, of Baltimore. Smith had begun preparing for an Independence Day party before the storm hit, buying chicken and spare ribs and planning a small gathering on her back porch. But that food spoiled when her power went out, so her party is off.

She planned to spend Wednesday's holiday at her parents' house 10 minutes away, which has electricity, and where she and her family have been staying. But her patience is wearing thin.

"I want to go back home," said Smith, adding that she calls the power company number three or four times a day to check on her power.

So far, the estimated time it will be back on is no earlier than Thursday.

The party Potomac, Md., resident James Gangler, a retired computer technician, planned to attend at his former boss' house was cancelled because of the outage. Although the cancellation email was sent Saturday, Gangler didn't see it until his own power returned Monday.

"I'm glad I saw it because I would have shown up there all by myself," he said.

A nearby swimming pool has reopened and that's where Gangler's wife Anna plans to celebrate the Fourth. But Gangler said he's looking forward to some cool relaxation at home.

"I'm just going to stay in and enjoy the air-conditioning and the quiet," he said.

In other iconic Fourth of July places, though, plans remained unchanged.

Fireworks on the National Mall in Washington were going forward. At George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, where power was initially off for 12 hours after the storm, plans for birthday cake and ice cream making were on. And in Colonial Williamsburg, the restored 18th century Revolutionary capital of Virginia, there were plans to celebrate with fifes and drums, musket and cannon fire, and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

In Williamsburg, partying like it's 1776, isn't anything new, said spokesman Jim Bradley.

"In a sense we do that every day, no matter what the weather," Bradley said.

Independence Day: Do July 4 droughts hurt fireworks sales?

Independence Day 2012 coincides with devastating wildfires across Colorado, resulting in a statewide ban on fireworks. But droughts are a common feature of the Independence Day holiday season, and the fireworks industry has found ways to cope with Mother Nature.

As wildfires raged this week across the drought-ravaged state of Colorado, Americans across the country were transfixed by the images of destruction streaming out of the region. But on the eve of the Independence Day holiday, a few select businessmen may have been watching those telecasts with a certain sinking feeling in their stomachs.

According to the National Retail Federation, this Independence Day more than 160 million people, or over 67 percent of Americans, plan to celebrate the patriotic anniversary with cookouts, barbeques and picnics. Nearly half of those celebrating, or close to 115 million people, are planning to attend a fireworks or community celebration.

They won?t be catching a display in Vail, Colorado, however. Not this year, anyway. Fireworks displays in the popular vacation destination have been canceled due to the extremely dry conditions and high fire risk, with nearly 400 wildfires reported in the state so far in 2012. And it?s not just Vail. On June 14, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed an Executive Order banning open burning and private use of fireworks statewide.

On top of potentially putting a damper on the celebrations of many state residents, the Governor?s actions is potentially bad news for the fireworks industry, which earns a majority of its revenue in the few weeks leading up to the holiday.

?Its something that we do have to watch very, very closely,? says Julie Heckman, executive director of the American Pyrotechnics Association (APA), a trade group that represents a whole gamut of different fireworks companies.? ?Mother nature will impact the 4th of July, whether it be storms like Tropical Debbie in the south, or hurricanes or even the storms we?ve experience last week which caused some cancellations in the D.C. area.?

Canceled shows can be rescheduled, Heckman says, predicting a spate of Labor Day shows to be slated this year in Colorado. And the larger, experienced companies know not to put all their proverbial sparklers in one basket.

?Most companies? they diversify,? Heckman says. ?If you?re in an area that typically has restrictions because of drought, you will also do business in states not prone to such restrictions. So you?ve basically balanced your financial risk. If you did business in Texas, you would be quite wise to also do business in New England.?

But dry weather and burn restrictions can still hurt various players in a retail industry that has over the past decade been steadily increasing in both reach and revenue ? even as the actual production of American fireworks now takes place almost exclusively in factories in China.?

?In certain areas, sales are down,? says William A. Werner, Vice President of the consumer fireworks behemoth Phantom.?

?Weather patterns the last six months have been pretty weird,? Weimer says. ?But this was unusual. Typically we don?t have these kinds of extreme weather conditions in multiple locations.?

On the other hand, Weimer is not particularly worried.

?Where there are not adverse weather conditions sales are very strong, so it?s really a dichotomy out there,? he says. And the last two years, even despite dry conditions in Texas and northern Florida still resulted in positive gains.

These things just come with the territory, according to John Werner, a member of the board of directors of the National Fireworks Association, another trade organization that deals mostly with the types of smaller retailers most vulnerable to burn bans like the one issued in Colorado. Weimer has been involved with professional pyrotechnics for going on 30 years, and has weathered plenty of droughts--and storms--along the way.

?It?s a finicky kind of business,? Werner says. ?And the people who get involved with it are used to dealing with the whims of the weather, and the regulations, which can change from year to year.?

Deena Nicole Cortese: Fined For Drunken Antics, Failure to Use Sidewalk

Jersey Shore's Deena Nicole Cortese won't face criminal charges for disorderly conduct following her arrest for acting like a drunk jackass in the middle of the day last month, however the hot mess will be forced to pay a fine.

For failing to use the sidewalk.

Deena Nicole Cortese Mug Shot

Deena was briefly jailed in Seaside Heights, N.J., for dancing in the streets and "slapping cars" ... seriously. Her parents sprung her later that day.

A disorderly conduct charge was dropped today in court, but Deena must pay a fine after pleading guilty to what is known as a "Title 39" instead.

That would be failure to use the sidewalk and instead walking in the middle of the street, which is technically a crime but hardly ever enforced.

She apologized for "causing any trouble," paid $139 and was let go, free to help Snooki push beer in a stroller until her guidette heart's content.

ACC announces 12-year deal with Orange Bowl

(AP) ? The Atlantic Coast Conference is remaining tied to the Orange Bowl.

The league on Tuesday announced a 12-year agreement with the bowl beginning after the 2014 season. It says details on the opponent and broadcast partner will come later.

The ACC has sent its champion to the South Florida-based bowl every year since 2006, and this announcement means that relationship will continue when the Bowl Subdivision makes the switch to a four-team playoff in two years.

"As we look ahead to the future of postseason college football, this will further an already beneficial partnership for both organizations," ACC Commissioner John Swofford said. "The Discover Orange Bowl has a rich history of prestige, is located within the league's footprint and is a great destination for our student-athletes, alumni and fans. In addition to our continued partnership, we are very pleased to be playing annually on New Year's Day."

The Orange Bowl will be played annually at 1 p.m. on Jan. 1.

The league anticipates the Orange Bowl hosting at least four semifinal games and says in those years, its champion will play in one of the three other host bowls.

If the ACC champion makes the playoffs, another ACC team will play in the Orange Bowl.

The ACC becomes the fifth major conference to announce a tie with a bowl that expects to be part of the pool of six bowls from which two semifinal sites will rotate. The Big 12 and Southeastern Conference are creating the Champions Bowl for their representatives, while the Big Ten and Pac-12 are committed to the Rose Bowl.

O. Ford Gibson, president and chair of the Orange Bowl Committee, says his bowl is "is extremely pleased to continue its relationship" with the ACC and is "looking forward to entering this new era of postseason collegiate football with a valued partner and its historically successful member institutions."
