Ben Taylor to Perform at The ArtsCenter on October 24th
CARRBORO, NC: The Southern Historical Collection at UNC?s Wilson Library presents an evening with singer-songwriter Ben Taylor and his band on October 24th at 8pm. The performance will help celebrate the 90th birthday of his grandmother, Trudy Taylor, and the placement of Taylor Family materials at the Southern Historical Collection at UNC. Tickets are $20 in advance, $16 for ArtsCenter Friends and UNC students (with an ID), and $22 the day of the show and may be purchased at www.artscenterlive.org or from The ArtsCenter Box Office at 919-929-2787 ext. 201.
Although Ben Taylor?s name may always be associated with parents James Taylor and Carly Simon, the singer-songwriter?s music shines on its own. Taylor?s recently released album, Listening, marks his first journey into record-label recording.
According to Rolling Stone, Taylor?s new record ?shows off Taylor?s soulful voice ? which bears more than a passing similarity to his father?s pipes ? alongside his trademark mix of blues-tinged guitar, Hammond organ and call-and-response backing vocals?. While you can almost hear James singing through Ben, the album is also refreshingly personal and captivating with honest lyrics and clear vocals. It provides a view into the young singer?s past four years and asserts his own perspective as an artist. Tracks like ?Oh Brother? shows that he can do more than sing to a guitar; a gospel choir backs him on the feel-good anthem. Yet issues of independence come through in the title track ?Listening?: ?I?m trying to find myself?I test the water and feel defined?. Interestingly, the track most shows off the strong finger-picking style and sweet voice inherited from dad James.
Programs at The ArtsCenter are supported in part by Courtyard by Marriott, Giorgios Hospitality Group and The North Carolina Arts Council.
