Adding another string to the already hefty bow of the iPod, iPhone and iPad a new patent has hinted that Apple is to add Thunderbolt ports to iDevices

Apple's reluctance to tarnish the design of its portable iDevices with data transfer ports could be about to come to an end with new patents revealing the company's plans to incorporate Thunderbolt connectors on future iPhone, iPod and iPad models.

Long criticised for there lack of USB abilities future generation iPhones, iPads and iPods look set to add the high speed transfer option with the Thunderbolt connector also capable of producing a faster charging method for the range of Apple branded products.

Having unveiled the Thunderbolt technology in early 2011, the high speed connector pioneered by Apple and Intel first appeared on a refresh of the Apple MacBook Pro before being rolled out across revised iMac and MacBook Air models.

"The present invention, connection may also be a new type of connection," Apple's official patent? filing read. "A connection may be provided between a portable media player and a display, a computer and a portable media player, or between other types of devices."

Whilst the three newly appointed patents have demonstrated how the inclusion of Thunderbolt technology would increase the file transfer rates between iDevices and computers, it is currently unclear as to whether the new connector would replace Apple?s current 30-pin port or sit as an alternative option.

Would the ability to transfer files and charge devices at a faster rate tempt you into splashing out on future iPads, iPhones and iPods? Let us know via the comments box below.
